Valley's first pre-season outing ended in a draw at UCL Premier South side Leicester Nirvana.
Nirvana, who have been laterally moved into the division Rugby were promoted out of last season, provided a good early pre-season test for Carl Adams men which featured most of the retained players from last season plus a number of trialists.
New signing Kyle Burke missed out with a hamstring strain while Edwin Ahenkorah, Tom Fielding and Loyiso Recci were also unavailable.
There was a start for last season's stand-out youth team player Ryan Sahota and the 18-year-old's performance was encouraging while Dan Summerfield made his first appearance after suffering a broken foot in January.
Trialists who featured for Rugby included Shay Young who was on loan with Rugby last season from Coventry City and Mason Platts who previously featured for Valley's youth team as well as left-back Hayden Seymour who also appeared last pre-season.
Rugby were generally on top in the opening period with Drew Kear getting in behind down the right on a number of occassions while Sahota came close when he out-jumped the goalkeeper but headed over.
David Kolodynski took advantage of a missed interception in the Nirvana defence, which included ex-Rugby defender Mason Rowley, to calmly slot past the home goalkeeper.
Jordan Wilson missed a gilt-edged chance near the start of the second half which turned into a typically disjointed pre-season affair with several changes made by both sides.
The hosts came close a couple of times before equalising with 15 minutes to go when a Nirvana substitute got the run on the Rugby defence in the inside right channel before finishing first time past the trialist goalkeeper.
