David Kolodynski's strike just after half time ensured Rugby Town a place in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup after victory at Barton Town.
It was another workmanlike performance against stubborn lower-level opposition, who were competitive throughout and certainly had their chances.
Ryan Sahota, Ethan O'Toole and Hilton Arthur were restored to Town's starting line-up in place of Chris Clements, Mikey Taylor and Madundo Semahimbo for the game on the banks of the Humber against hosts that were in search of a Second Qualifying Round berth for the first time in their history.
The Northern Counties East side created the first chance of the game with less than a minute on the clock when Grant Tait shot from distance, but Valley keeper Paul Hathaway was able to gather the ball comfortably.
A minute later, Damien Osoimoejiokhian was also trying his luck from long range after O'Toole and Kolodynski had combined well to tee him up, but the full back's arrowed strike was also straight at Hathaway's counterpart James Hitchcock.
A Kolodynski free-kick took a deflection - which took any pace of the attempt, and in turn failed to trouble Hitchcock, before Barton almost grabbed a shock lead when Tom Waudby's audacious effort from outside the area left Hathaway only able to watch as the ball hit the post and bounced away to safety.
At the other end, a tame effort from Arthur was gathered by Hitchcock, and then Harrison Nee dragged a shot against the Barton post from an angled position in Town's best chance of the first half.
Ali Aydemir's shot was then blocked for the Swans, before the home side went extremely close to breaking the deadlock again when Hathaway pulled off a top drawer acrobatic save to claw away Scott Phillips's header just before the interval.
Rugby went ahead six minutes into the new period though, when Sahota did well to steal possession in midfield before passing the ball onto Kolodynski - who performed a neat turn and then applied an instinctive low strike beyond the reach of Hitchcock from more than twenty yards.
Sahota flashed in a dangerous cross just after the goal but it was just out of reach of his team-mates, as Town looked to make the tie safe, with Barton's Jack Bulless heading one off-target and a Tait effort also failing to trouble Hathaway.
Valley had three great opportunities to grab their second in added-time as the game inevitably became stretched.
First Semahimbo dragged his shot wide from a decent position after Nee had set him up and then the same player lofted one onto the roof of the net, before a pacy run from Nee ended with his unsuccessful attempt to sneak one past Hitchcock at the near post.
