Valley won through to the next round of the Birmingham Senior Cup with a comfortable win over a young Coventry City side.

Town fell behind midway through the first half after the visitors successfully converted a penalty-kick, but Sam Tye's brace of headers and substitute Trey Charles's second goal in two games sealed the win.

There was a starting debut for 18-year-old Town Academy defender Fabian Stolowski while fellow youth players Alex Dulgheru and Dylan Cook were named as substitutes.

There was also a first start for Mansfield Town loanee Dan Organ with Callum Griffin, Stan Anaebonam and Bleu McNeil all returning to Rugby's opening line-up McNeil sent one over the bar early on, after the ball had come to back to him from his own long-throw, before Success Nidjebu fired into the side-netting for City.

Organ's powerfully struck low cross then cannoned off Jack Concannon, and at the other end Tye saved the day with a well-timed tackle in his box as the relatively even start to the game continued.

However, the visitors took the lead on 23 minutes after Geoffrey Lundoloki's hand on the back of Nidjebu saw the Coventry attacker go down in the penalty area, and Conrad Ambursley made no mistake from the spot - sending Marcus Bald the wrong way, as he stroked the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

City looked to push the score on further in the immediate aftermath of their opener, and both Ambursley and Nidjebu struck efforts way off target.

Rugby took control of the final quarter of an hour of the first-half though, with the equaliser coming on 34 minutes after keeper Oscar Varney misjudged Griffin's deeply delivered cross, and Tye read it perfectly in meeting it with a simple header into an unguarded goal.

Cairo Taylor then flicked a header to Anaebonam's cross wide, before Rugby thought they had taken the lead when Organ helped the ball home following good feet on the edge of the box from Concannon followed by a blocked effort from Griffin - only to see a raised flag on the touchline.

Tyler Brophy's tackle on Taylor denied him a shooting opportunity after an excellent through pass from Organ had played him in, with McNeil's shot blocked and Griffin's swerving free-kick punched clear by Varney ahead of the half-time whistle.

The new period started quietly, although Varney did spill a Tye cross before the danger was dealt with, and Joshua Stidder also threatened with a delivery from wide for the youthful visitors.

The introductions of Charles and Teddy Rowe on 53 minutes had given the hosts fresh impetus though, and Charles was soon causing the defence problems with his pace and power.

A great run from Stolowski ended with a strike that rose just above the bar, and in a rare Coventry attack, Lundoloki and Bald just about combined to thwart Nidjebu in the box.

It was pretty much all Valley though, as they pinned their young opponents back into their own half for long periods - with the large Valley following behind the goal doing all they could to inspire their team's efforts further.

Dulgheru went close to marking his senior debut from the bench when he almost forced one home from close range after good work from Concannon, and Varney pulled off a neat save to Charles's well-struck curling effort from out wide.

The deserved goal came on 77 minutes when Tye headed in his second of the night by glancing in Charles's excellent cross from the right. Town extended their lead not long after when Organ executed another fine slide-rule pass to release Charles down the middle, with the striker hitting the post with his first effort before following up to net the rebound.

Another cross from Charles was just out of the reach of both Dulgheru and fellow sub debutant Cook, before a low shot from Anaebonam was saved by a full-stretch Varney, with a further effort from the same Rugby man later blocked away.

Coventry almost grabbed a late consolation when Nidjebu's strike was blocked on the slide by Nathan Kabeya, with McNeil clearing the danger seconds before the game came to a conclusion.

Valley Line-up: Bald; Stolowski, Lundoloki, McNeil, Kabeya; Tye, Griffin (Dulgheru 67'), Concannon (Rowe 53'); Taylor (Charles 53'), Anaebonam, Organ (Cook 83'). Subs not used: Thomas. Booked: Lundoloki, Organ.
