A Sam Tye brace first half brace ensured a safe passage into the next round of the Emirates FA Cup for Rugby Town.
It was a relatively comfortable afternoon for Valley at a hot and sunny Butlin Road in the opening round of the FA Cup against Midland Football League Premier side Uttoxeter Town who rarely threatened Ash Bodycote in the Rugby goal.
Valley boss Grant Joshua was in the dugout for the first time this season following the completion of his three-match touchline ban and he made two changes to his starting line-up with Ben Richards and Charlie Tilley both making their full debuts in place of Jamie Ashmore and Nathan Scott.
Ashmore's absence was short-lived however after he made an early appearance from the bench in place of Ryan Bridgewater who hobbled off with a worrying-looking knee injury in the opening exchanges.
Town once again found themselves in front early in the game after Richards headed on Aaron Nuttall's corner to the back-post to enable Tye to cleverly hook the ball home into the bottom corner after just eight minutes.
Nuttall then nearly played in Ryan Boothe, before the visitors mounted a rare attack which saw Will Minton tease a dangerous low cross across the face of the goal, but it was just beyond his team-mates.
Tilley's speculative effort flew over the bar, and Tye opted to pass rather than shoot after neat interchange play between the midfielder and Rivel Mardenborough had left Tye in good position.
Nuttall and Tye then linked up well to set up Boothe, but he dragged his shot from the edge of the penalty area wide of the target, as Rugby remained in control of the game.
Uttoxeter keeper Charlie Wood pulled off fine back-to-back close range stops to first deny Boothe after Nuttall's cross had picked him out, and also to keep out Mardenborough's follow-up effort from a more angled position.
Boothe had a further effort blocked after Mardenborough had played the ball through to him, with Nuttall also curling one agonisingly wide.
Jake Avery's weak, low strike finally gave Bodycote something to do, before Town increased their lead on the stroke of half-time when Tye was again well-placed to guide home Mardenborough's pull across from the right after the visitors had only half cleared a Nuttall corner.
Valley started the new period where they had left off the previous one, with Mardenborough firing over the bar and Tilley heading wide.
Richards also headed a Jake Duffy free-kick over, and Boothe's close-range strike was blocked, with both Tye and sub Nathan Scott sending in threatening crosses from the right-hand side.
Nuttall also put in a couple of dangerous ball from out wide, with Tye missing out on a hat-trick opportunity when Wood did well to keep out his first-time effort after Tilley had released him down the middle.
Tilley's on-target shot was blocked by his own player Mardenborough, before Uttoxeter ended the game with a couple of chances for a late consolation, but Bodycote was equal to Avery's rising effort and sub Niall Rushton blazed one way over after he had cut in from the left.
