Valley suffered their first defeat of the season as FC Peterborough came from behind twice to win at Butlin Road.

The win also represented the visitors' first points at this level following their promotion last season as they saw off a Rugby side that had missed a number of good opportunities to seal the points earlier in the game.

With Louis Samuels ruled out with a shoulder injury, there was a first start for Nathan Scott in a wide berth, and Ryan Boothe also came in from the off in place of Devonn O'Sullivan.

For the third match in a row, Town once more started brightly, with Aaron Nuttall setting up Boothe for a shot in the opening minutes - but Peterborough keeper Danny Foulger was equal to the striker's side-footed effort.

Aziz Mhamdi did have a decent strike blocked, but it was mainly the hosts who threatened early on - with Jake Wormleighton's header to Jake Duffy's corner taken at the second attempt by Foulger and Rivel Mardenborough's header to a further Duffy set-piece delivery also keeping the visiting stopper in the action.

Sam Tye should really have done better with Boothe's lay-off to him following a long-throw into the box, before Valley finally got reward for their efforts when Ryan Bridgewater stooped to flick home a whipped-in free-kick from Duffy on thirteen minutes.

Mhamdi's speculative effort from the left-hand side bounced well wide of the target after Ash Bodycote had only partially claimed a high ball in behind the Town defence, as the visitors looked for a quick response.

Nuttall dragged one agonisingly the wrong side of the post after he had applied a good first touch to Scott's long cross-field pass, and then Tye just failed to make something of a teasing, floated free-kick from Duffy.

David Yisah's well-timed run saw Bodycote again out to try and halt an FC incursion, with Mhamdi pouncing on the loose ball to set up Derick Dadzie for a shot - which he blazed way over.

Nuttall's first-time strike also flew high of the frame, and Foulger pulled off a decent low stop to deny Boothe, before Town gave Mhamdi too much time and space in a central position and he made them pay by unleashing a superb effort from 25 yards which beat Bodycote into the corner of the net.

A dangerous Boothe cross was just cut out, before he then missed a glorious opportunity to restore the home side's advantage ahead of the half-time break when he somehow struck the upright with the goal gaping after Nuttall's initial strike to a scooped pass from Duffy had been saved by Foulger.

The first real chance of the new period also fell to Boothe, but he could only guide Rivel Mardenborough's lay-back over the bar.

Valley's second came from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, with Boothe sending Foulger the wrong way after Domingos Sanha had fouled Nuttall.

Wormleighton headed Duffy's corner over, before the increasingly-dangerous Mhamdi did the same to a Soltan Musa cross at the other end.

The visitors' second equaliser of the afternoon came after a neatly-constructed team move ended with Mhamdi finishing off Dadzia's low cross to the far post.

Tye nearly capitalised on a Boothe pass, before Peterborough grabbed what proved to be the winner on 78 minutes when Vitor Vaz confidently dispatched his spot-kick into the bottom left corner after Bridgwater had brought down Mhamdi after the two-goal man had initially dispossessed Town skipper Jamie Ashmore near the halfway line.

Sub O'Sullivan's cross was just too high for Nuttall, and fellow replacement Charlie Tilley shot on the turn from close quarters was blocked, with Wormleighton then meeting another Duffy corner with his head - only to find Foulger making another decent save.

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser to the end, and the closest they came to this saw Foulger comfortably gather Tilley's header in the final attack of the game.
