Chelmsford were regular Southern League Premier opponents for Valley until Rugby's relegation in 1996.

In 22 meetings between the sides, Rugby have mustered only one win - which came in a SL Eastern Division game in 2000 when Jason Woodley and Darren Towers were on the scoresheet.

City knocked Valley out of the FA Cup in the 2006/7 season in the 3rd Qualifying Round despite Rugby taking a first half lead through Jason Taylor.
