Royston were promoted to the Southern League Division One Central from the South Midlands League for the 2012/13 season.

The meetings between Rugby and Royston in the 12/13 season were littered with problems.

The first meeting between the clubs in November 2012 had to be abandoned due to floodlight failure with Royston leading at the time while the away fixture in February was also controversially abandoned with Royston refusing to return to the field of play after a bad injury to Rugby's Robbie Banks.
